Modest Dress Alteration

Hello, darlings!

I have realised in my search for modest clothing that it is simply going to take creativity! Shop here and there and make adjustments if necessary. And I am starting with this boho style maxi dress!

Today I wanted to share with you the step by step process of how I altered this dress to suit my standards and purpose.

This dress was a hand me down from my mum. It was a bit too long for me so I decided to take it up myself.

I also wasn't comfortable with how high the slit came on me, so I planned to fix that as well.

Step 1

First I laid it out on the floor and smoothed it out flat. Then I took one of my long dresses to use as a guide on how much to cut off this dress.

Step 2
I cut strips of the dress off one at a time to make sure I still had some seam allowance. To avoid the fabric fraying, I rolled the hem over twice to hide the raw edge, hence why I left some extra fabric at the end.

Step 3
This dress had a bit of an uneven hem, to begin with, and the pattern didn't match up all around it so folding and pinning the hem was a little tricky. But with patience (which to be honest I don't have a lot of!) and the help of a hot iron, I got it all neatly folded and pressed ready for sewing!

Step 4
Then I just sewed as straight as possible allllll the way along the bottom of the dress.

Step 5
After that, I hand sewing the tails in and secured them with a knot!

Step 6
To fix up the slit, all I did was put both edged of the fabric together and sewed down a little way.

Here it is shown after I sewed and ironed it flat. Lastly, I stitched in the tails, and voila, it was finished!

Before & After
I am super happy with how it turned out and now I can't wait for Spring and Summer to wear it.
Maybe I'll try to make a cooler weather outfit with it though.

Here is the now smaller slit up the front.

I hope this post might give you inspiration for your clothes!

Let me know in the comments if you like wearing dresses or are more of a jeans type?
Personally, I like the comfort of jeans(especially in the colder months) but I love the feminine feel that dresses and skirts give.
