Sin Entered the World // Christmas Through the Carols

Hello darlings!

This week was the first week of the Christmas Through the Carols Advent Bible reading plan that I created (link to that here).
The theme for this week was looking at  the Fall, & how sin came into the world, creating a need for a savior.

We began by looking in Genesis 3, which I love as a passage and find incredibly powerful.
Today, I wanted to share a few of the points I took away from reading & studying this chapter of the Bible.

First off, this chapter tells us lot about how Satan works.
As a Christian it is important to know our enemy, Satan, so that we can be prepared for his attacks and know how to fight back.
Here's what I found:

The serpent was more subtil (crafty) than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He crept in silently, and still does today, planting doubt and questioning the words of God.
He caused Eve to doubt the words of the Lord by asking her, "Did God really say...?"

"Satan suggested that God was withholding something good from them & tempted them to reach and grab what would make them like God himself." ~ Nancy Guthrie

On the flip side...

God always speaks truth. He never lies and always gives us rules that will guide us and keep us safe.
Psalm 84:11 says this: ...No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
Adam & Eve were already made in the image of God, there did not need to make themselves more or better than Him.

My main takeaway point from my notes is this.

The fruit of the forbidden tree looked good. It was pleasing to the eyes, and it was tempting to reach out and pick one.
Something may look pleasing, tempting, promise us happiness, or satisfaction.
But the worldly things that are tempting to try or take, will not ultimately bring us fulfillment.
Alchohol, drugs, porn etc. may offer relief, satisfaction and happiness but their charms quickly fade and like Adam & Eve, we are left empty, cheated and ashamed.
When Adam & Eve ate the fruit, their eyes where opened and instead of feeling satisfied, they wee ashamed.

The Lord promises good things and true fulfillment. Because He is Lord God, His Word is to be trusted to be true & His promises sure.

At the end of this sad day in history, it seems as if all is lost.
But hush, the Lord is doing something! He has a plan to rescue his people from the result of sin-death-by sending His Son Jesus to die for us. Jesus died the death we deserve as sinners, but he became the ransom for us.
The story does have a happy and good ending. We who believe in Him and his sacrifice on the cross have the hope of heaven to cling to!

During this season of Christmas, we get to celebrate the gift the God gave the world on that night long ago.
May we ever be thankful & grateful for His love in giving up His son to die a sinners death so that we could experience the joys of heaven!

Favourite Christmas Albums

Hello darlings!

"It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas..."
One of the things I really love about this time of year is the music. The fun Christmassy songs and the rich & meaningful carols that tell of the Nativity.

This year I've discovered some new Christmas albums & songs and I want to share them (and some old ones) with you.
I do realise that some of these were in my favourite Christmas songs post from last year but there some new ones as well so I hope you'll enjoy this none the less!

Christmas - Phil Wickham

I listened to this today and I love the whole album, but I think Away In A Manger (Forever Amen) is my favourite.
Phil has a great voice and these songs capture the joyfulness of he Christmas season!

Behold The Lamb Of God - Andrew Peterson

I enjoyed Andrew Peterson's Easter album earlier this year and I also quite like his Christmas album.
I also have to be honest and say that I think this song (Matthew's Begats) is my favourite!

Unto Us - JJ Heller

JJ Heller's Christmas album is a favourite for most of our family. It's so calming, peaceful and happy feels.
I love all of the songs on this album so it is hard to pick a favourite but if I did have to choose one I'd have to go with Unto Us.

Christmas - Michael Buble

I think most people can agree that Michael Buble is a Christmas classic! His voice can be heard singing "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas..." in the supermarket, the mall and pretty much everywhere this season.
So each year I enjoy listening to a bit of Buble while making Christmas cookies or doing some other Christmas related activity.

Christmas - Guy Penrod

This album is another comforting & cosy one perfect for a festive evening by the Christmas tree!

Those are the albums that have made their way onto my favourite list but I have a few singles that I love to listen to during the Christmas period as well.

- Glory by JJ Heller
- Messiah by Francesca Batistelli
- Light of the World by Lauren Daigle
- Mary, Did You Know? by Pentatonix
- All Glory Be To Christ by Nomads + Natives

What is your favourite Christmas album? I'd love to discover new songs!

I decided to post today since earlier this week I forgot about posting so this ought to make up for that!
Look out for another post tomorrow...

Christmas Gift Guide for Young Ladies

Hello darlings!

With Christmas fast approaching, I thought it would be fun to compile a few gift ideas for the special girls in your life!
I have to be honest with you and say that I love giving & receiving gifts both equally.
It is fun to pick out something for someone you love, carefully wrap it up and then present it to them at Christmas time.

I do love homemade gifts and think that they are a great option that shows extra thought in your gift. But I am here today to share some fun things I have found that I think would make wonderful Christmas presents!

Let's go!

Disclaimer:
Many of these will be New Zealand stores so if you live outside of NZ, I apologize if you can't find it in your country. But most of these things(or similar versions) should be available at a range of stores worldwide.

1. ESV Journaling Bible Elegant Grace Print from Manna Christian Store
A beautiful journaling Bible like this one would be a great gift for a girl in your life who loves studying the Bible and who has an artistic side.

2. Little Letter Necklace in Silver or Gold from Sophie Store
I myself would love to get one of these sweet little letter necklaces! It's small, special and slightly personal because you can pick out their initial.

3. Love Defined by Kristen Clark & Bethany Baird from Amazon
If you know a girl who loves to read, get her this wonderful book! It's full of practical and biblical advice and perspectives on romantic relationships.

4. Sol Cup Reusable Glass Coffee Cup from Oh Natural
If your friend is a coffee lover, a pretty & reusable coffee cup would be perfect for her. This one is gorgeous with its pink accents and bound to make whoever you gift it to happy.

5. Emma Block Lady Cyclist A5 Notebook from Emma Block's Etsy Store
A small notebook with a darling cover illustration by Emma Block would be great for the girl ho can't get enough stationary. Pair this with a cute pen, and maybe a pencil case for a cute gift to give your stationery fanatic!

6. Kind Is The New Classy by Candace Cameron Bure from Amazon
Another great read that any of your friends or women in your life are bound to love! Candace Cameron Bure's book talks about the lack of kindness in this world and how women can put kindness into practice in their lives.

7. Canvas Tote Bag : Woodland from kikki.K
I would personally get this tote bag as a way of holding other smaller gifts inside it. Imagine the delight on that special girls face when she pulls all the little hand-picked goodies out of this adorable tote bag (gift wrapping that is also part of the gift!).

8. Burt's Bees Holiday Spa Collection from Burt's Bees
Girls, be honest, we all would love a gift like this! Pamper your girlfriend by gifting her this lovely spa set from Burt's Bees. Maybe you could have a spa day together at a later date and create a memory too!

9. Tickets to a concert or event
Does your friend or sister have a favourite band? Or maybe she would love to go see a ballet? Get tickets for the two of you to go and do this together. Not only will she loves it but you will share the experience and make memories.

10. Velvet Knotted Headband - Baby Pink
For the girl that you know loves a good accessory, gift her this beautiful velvet headband!

I hope these ideas help you find the perfect gift for the girls in your life that are special to you.
Personally, I would love to receive any of these!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Through the Carols // FREE Advent Bible Reading Plan

Hello darlings!

You know those ideas that just come to you out of nowhere and you have no idea if it will even work or how to do it but you go ahead and do it anyway?

Well, this was one of those ideas. I was just going about my day when the idea to create my own Advent Bible reading plan came to me and I went with it! I didn't know how was even going to create this, but I am very pleased with how it turned out.

So I am very excited to bring to you my Christmas Through the Carols Advent Bible reading plan!

~ ~ ~ ~

What inspired this plan?
It is called 'Christmas through the Carols because I wanted to take some of my favourite and most popular carols and delve into them a little and think about the words and how they relate to the beautiful Christmas story.
Throughout the month of December, I have compiled my favourite versions of the carols I selected for you to listen to.

How do you use this plan?
Each day there is a scripture reading and a song/activity. The scriptures were selected carefully to explore several main themes that encompass the Christmas story. The Fall, our need for a Saviour, prophecies of the Messiah, the coming of the Messiah, and hope for His second coming.
Through this plan, we will be reading form all over the Bible, including the Old Testament, the Gospels and even the letters in the New Testament to get a broad picture of the whole story and the wonderful way that God wrote it.

Right, are you ready to see this Christmas Bible reading plan? Okay in...

What else can you expect this month?

Some fun, Christmassy posts here on this blog,  plus snippets of my Christmas preparations and what I get out of this Advent study over on my Instagram (@joy_and_wildflowers).
I have also created a playlist with all of the songs in this Bible reading plan so that it is easier to find them.

I hope and pray that if you use this plan that it will fill you with hope and encourage you during this Christmas season.
One thing that I really desire is that we would all become women who love and cherish their Bibles and time spent between its pages.
In doing this plan I also hope it will help us keep our eyes on Him during this busy but wonderful time of year.

Holiday & Christmas Haul

Hello, darlings!
I trust you all had a relaxing and special Christmas time, I sure did. My family all got together on Christmas Eve, shared a yummy meal, exchanged gifts and had a wonderful evening.

I thought in today's post I would share the things I was blessed with this Christmas and also the bit and pieces I picked up while my family was on holiday(or vacation as some of you might say!).

So while we were on our family holiday I splurged a bit...
(Left) 1. I found Season 2 of Downton Abbey while browsing a second-hand shop and I was thrilled because I already own Season 1. I wonder if I could collect it all from thrift shops...
(Center) 2. I couldn't resist this pretty pink notebook with gold detailing and it was cheap sooooo...
(Right) 3. I wanted to find a planner to help organize my school better so I found this pretty one which I love because there is a good amount of space for each day.

Sometimes you've got to treat yourself and get some nice beauty products!
This strawberry body butter is heavenly and I can't wait to smell like a sweet berry this Summer.

I got some pens that I needed too, but I won't bother showing those. I just bought them because I noticed that I really don't have many and that a few to add to my pencil case wouldn't hurt!

Top: Another thrift shop find! My dad is a locksmith so when I saw these studs, I knew I had to get them.
Middle: I once saw earring very similar to these in a period drama (The Crown, Victoria or The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) and fell in love with them. Then I found these, in an art deco shop which was full of period style pieces, accessories and trinkets.
Bottom: This cute pin was a last minute purchase that I picked up while waiting at the counter and I love it. It is a geometric fantail, a native bird to New Zealand which I love.

Aren't these bookmarks adorable? I think so, and they are practical too. I am using them both in my Bible and in the books I'm reading.

Last but not least, I bought a bunch of postcards (these aren't even all of them) to stick in my holiday journal and use in my room.

C H R I S T M A S   G I F T S

I was given some lovely girly beauty/jewellery items, to begin with! The earrings are from my auntie who runs a small business called Happyful. I have worn them a lot already.

I'm pretty sure that when I opened this present I was beaming from ear to ear! I have been really enjoying  Audrey's movies lately and her style, so I am pumped to have this beautiful book. (Thanks Anna!)
This section is featuring pictures from How to Steal a Million, which is one that I really liked!

I am so excited to read through this sweet looking devotional! My dear Nonna gifted me this book as well as this other one...

I have already started reading this book and I am liking it so far. The writing style reminds me a teensy bit of The Book Thief. It has been a while since I've read anything historical of WW2 so I am curious to see how this one will turn out.

My brother said in his Christmas card that I had been fairly good this year and so out of the kindness of his heart he got me this present! Okaaay......
I love his sense of humour!

It makes me so happy to get clothes! The sleeves of this shirt are really cool and it looks quite cute tied up in the front.

And last but not least I have this stylish tee from my aunt.
I have already worn it a lot this week. Its soft, feminine and I love the cut of it!

I feel so grateful and blessed to have received these lovely things!

What did you get for Christmas that you are most excited about?

Behold Your King // Christmas Favourites Part 2

Hey Wildflowers!

I first would like to apologize that this post is a little late, due to computer issues and travelling.
But I am here now to complete this two-part Christmas Favourites post!

You can read Part One here.

For this part of my Christmas favourites, I wanted to focus on the spiritual part of the season.
This December I found a few great resources to get into the Word and fully prepare for the celebration.

The first one is a 3-part series by Revive Our Hearts called Unto You Is Born This Day.
In these three sessions, Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth take us through Luke 2 in a way I haven't ever read before. My eyes were truly opened to many new things about the Christmas story I thought I knew so well.

Next are three classic Christmas carols that I fell in love with this Christmas.
Infant Holy, Infant Lowly is a beautiful and sweet carol that is similar to Away in a Manger but has a different aspect.
O Little Town of Bethlehem is one that I never much liked when I was younger but I really quite like it now. It reminds me of Micah 5:2, here it is prophesied that the small town of Bethlehem is chosen out of all Israel to be the birthplace of the Mighty Ruler.
Come Thou Long Expected Jesus is also one that I came to appreciate and love.
So, now I strongly recommend that you go and listen to these carols and bask in their joy before the Christmas season is over!

Moving on, another favourite of mine was Luke chapter 2. Have you ever thought about how real, beautiful and wonderful the Christmas story is?
It is real because it is from the Bible. Mary and Joseph were real, ordinary folk who God chose to serve a great purpose.
It is beautiful because of how it was all so carefully planned and came about so perfectly, in a way that only God can accomplish.
And it is wonderful because it holds so much joy, hope and peace for this day and age. In the midst of unrest, wars, trials and anger, God has brought peace for us.

I truly hope that you all had an AMAZING Christmastime with your loved ones!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!

xoxo

NOEL, NOEL // Christmas Faves Part 1

Guys! It's that time of year again!
Christmas time is my absolute favourite time of year. I love it even more than my birthday because the whole world acknowledges it. You see the festive decorations everywhere, everyone gets gifts(not just the person whose birthday it is) and it's a lovely, happy time together with people you love.

In honour of the Christmas season, I want to post some Christmas cheer on my blog during this month.
Today's post it Part 1 of 2 posts about some of my Christmassy favourites. From music to movies, books and Pinteresty Christmas aesthetic.
By the way, all the photos in this post are my own unless stated otherwise!

First off, this November/December, I have discovered some new and wonderful Christmas songs that I love. Here's my top 4!

Top 4 Fav Christmas songs this year:

1. Light of the World by Lauren Daigle - Makes my heart want to cry out in worship!

2. Unto Us by JJ Heller - Beautiful, soothing song!

3. O Tannenbaum by Andrea Bocelli - A lovely song sung by a great voice.

4. O Holy Night by Lauren Daigle - I adore this carol and Lauren's voice is so, so good singing it!

If you're anything like me, you love to be fully immersed into EVERYTHING Christmas, and of course, that includes movies!
Besides the cliche', slightly cheesy, but also decent Hallmark Christmas movies(that I do normally enjoy to some degree) I have some others that you may not have heard about to recommend.

I'll include a small list right here!

As for Christmas books, I actually haven't read many of those so I do not have any to recommend or fangirl about! One that I did read last year and loved was The Shoe Box by Francine Rivers.
It is a beautiful and sweet story that you should totally check out this season!
This is the short story of a little boy named Timmy whose only valued possession is a shoe box. His foster parents, a young Christian couple, are of course curious about this 6-year-old's mysterious box. What could be inside?
The Christmas pageant finale is a true heart warmer for all believers.
The Shoe Box on Goodreads

If you asked me what my favourite thing about Christmas was, I would not be able to give a straight answer because I seriously love everything about it! I will try to condense a small list of my main highlights of the event though.

• The family gathers all together and enjoys a sweet time of fellowship and sharing.
• ALL. THE. YUMMY. FOOD.
• Gift exchanging time! I generally make gifts for everybody but this year we drew names out of a hat I have my mum to shop for.
• Christmas music is THE BEST and I strictly forbid myself or anyone in the house to listen to it at any other time of the year. This year I officially started on Nov 1st!

I find it funny how even though Christmas falls in our Summertime, we still have frosty and wintery decorations and listen to "Winter Wonderland"(and other snowy songs)!

And that is all for Part 1 of my Christmas favourites/chat/lists!
What food is your fave around Christmas time?

P.S. I will be sharing some Christmas wallpapers of my photography with Christmas quotes, lyrics or Bible verses on my Instagram (@joy_and_wildflowers) so make sure you follow!

xoxo

Favourite Christmas Songs

Alright, let's get this very clear. I love music! Music is one of the things I could not live without and I'm not ashamed of it.
I absolutely love listening to music while I do this and that. I am listening to music now as I write this as I often do when I blog.
It makes me happy, inspires me or puts me the the right mood for the occasion. I just love it.

This post is going to be all about Christmas music. Surprised?

I have to start with Michael Buble of course.
My favourite Michael Buble Christmas songs are:
White Christmas (Duet with Shania Twain)
All I Want For Christmas
Silent Night
Silver Bells
Mis Deseos/Feliz Navidad (Duet with Thalia)

Sample

Overall Michael Buble just has a great jazzy singing voice that I love. If you haven't heard of him you should really listen to his stuff.(You may find yourself singing along and dancing around the room!)

Pentatonix
The Pentatonix Acappella group makes some great stuff that's for sure. They are great singers and I love their Christmas songs, especially these:
Away in a Manger
Deck the Halls
Sleigh Ride
The First Noel
Let is Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
Joy to the World

Sample

Really lovely tunes to get you excited for the December season!

The Piano Guys
My family has been listening to these guys for a few years now and I really like how hey make classical music a bit more exciting.
They just released a new Christmas album, Christmas Together.
My faves from them are:
Angels from the Realms of Glory
This song is so good I have to say something about it. Its so joyful, triumphant and glorious! It captures all the anticipation leading up to Christmas. You must listen to it!
Ode to Joy to the World
I saw Three Ships
The Sweetest Gift
This song is so sad but beautiful. It is dedicated to Annie Schmidt, who was Jon Schmidt's daughter. (Jon is the pianist) She fell of a cliff when she was hiking about a year ago. She was only about 20.
Even though I haven't lost anyone, I still quite like it.

Sample (Amazing!)

Guy Penrod
Guy Penrod's songs have a warm, country, family feel to them.
From his album my favourites are:
Tennessee Christmas
Winter Wonderland
The Twelve Days of Christmas
Away in a Manger
A Cradle in Bethlehem
O Holy Night
Sample

Go and listen to them will you? It will add some warmth to your Christmas for sure! Not that we need any more warmth as it has been so hot here.

Home Free
They sing my favourite carol O Holy Night so well!
Angels We have Heard on High
Silent Night
White Christmas
are also great in their deep manly voices!

Others
Little Drummer Boy by Peter Hollens
Messiah by Francesca Battistelli
This is the best lyric video ever!
Let it Snow by Dean Martin
I saw Three Ships by Lindsey Stirling
Heaven Everywhere by Francesca Battistelli

Well I hope you enjoyed that and you check out some of these!
This is one of the last Christmasy posts and I am sad about that but there will be 3 more before the year is out!
Yes, I will be posting a short post on Christmas Day.

What post would you like me do do in 2019?
Favourite Christmas song?

The Christmas Tag

Oh, how I love all things Christmassy! So of course I had to find out if there was a Christmas tag.

1. What is your favourite Christmas movie?
Hmmmmm.......I don't have a favourite but there are a few I quite like. Little Women 1994, A Royal Christmas, Christmas Oranges, and When Calls The Heart Christmas are all nice. I know there are more but I literally can't think of them.

2. Have you ever had a white Christmas?
I am very sad to say that, no, I have never had I white Christmas. Where I live it's summertime in December.

3. Where do you usually spend your holiday?
At my house or we used to do have Christmas celebrations and my grandparents house.

4. What is your favourite Christmas song?
I love O Holy Night! Angels We Have Heard On High and any Michael Buble Christmas songs are great too.

5. Do you open any Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve?
Yes. Christmas Eve is when we give all the presents. We get them early!

6. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?
Rudolf, Dasher, Prancer, Vixen, Dancer, Blizten..... I don't know the rest. Santa isn't a big part of our Christmas celebrations.

7. What holiday traditions are you looking forward to most this year?
Singing carols(because I am going to try play the guitar while we sing), eating the ham( we cover it in mustard and wrap it up in dough so it has a bready covering), giving presents, and everything really!

8. Is your Christmas tree real or fake?
We have always had a real one. Last year we were late it looking for one so used a fake one. This year I really want to try and get a real, piney, good-smelling tree, but if we can't then at least we have a back up fake tree. Still not the same though!

9. What is your all-time favourite holiday food/sweet treat?
Candy canes, Brunsli, our ham, any of the cookies, and any of the chocolate! Is it cheating to have multiple answers?

10. Be honest: do you like giving gifts or receiving gifts better?
Both. This is a totally honest answer. Maybe I like receiving a little more but I do really like making Christmas gifts and watching the reactions as they get opened.

11. What is the best gift you've ever received?
Our whole family got a Nespresso coffee machine last year. That was pretty cool. I can't really say. All of my gifts have been nice!

12. What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?
Anywhere were it snows! Switzerland or England probably. We have relatives in both countries!

13. Are you a pro-present wrapper, or do you fail miserably?
I'd say I'm pretty good at wrapping presents. Not a pro but good enough!

14. Most memorable holiday moment?
I have many memorable holiday moments. From making cookies with my Mother, decorating the tree, sitting around in our grandparents garden eating yummy things to opening my presents and looking at out grandparents tree.

15. What made you realise the truth about Santa?
I never believed in Santa. We were taught the real reason for Christmas from the start.

16. Do you make New Years resolutions? Do you stick to them?
I haven't stuck to any of the resolutions/goals I made for this year. But I am hopeful for next year!

17. What makes the holidays special for you?
The fact that the whole family is together and has a lovely time together. I love that. It is a very special time of year and who better to spend it with than your own dear family!
Also the thing we are celebrating. Jesus' entrance into the world.

Hope you enjoyed reading my answers to The Christmas Tag!
