August Favourites

Hello darlings!

This month has flown by for me.
On the 3rd of August I turned sixteen and it still feels like only yesterday. Even though I am know sixteen, I still tell some people that I'm fifteen by mistake!

As usual I have some of my favourite things to share with you. I honestly love doing these posts and its a way to track my favourite things through the years.

Let's get started!

BOOKS

Like last month, I only completed 4 books in the month of August. But I am content with that, and happy with the ones I did read.
• Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin
• These Happy Golden Years by Laura Ingalls Wilder
• Weddings, Willows and Revised Expectations by V. Joy Palmer (Review here)
• Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis

This book might be small, but it makes for a quick read and one that will change the way you think about the way you do your Bible study! So this book instantly jumped right up on my favourite books of the month list. I'll leave my Goodreads review linked here.

I am going to be writing a whole post just about my favourite quotes from this book, but just to get it out there, this book is so good!
I highly recommend you read it, if you haven't already. I wish I had read it sooner. But I also think I read it at just the right time. My Goodreads review is right here.

MUSIC & PODCASTS

I did listen to some more things this month than I did in July!

• Come Ye Sinners, Poor & Needy by Fernando Ortega
This is one of those older hymns and I just love the lyrics! They have so much depth and meaning.

• Nothing to Fear by The Porter's Gate ft. Audrey Assad
I love Audrey Assad's voice! It is so lovely and calming. Nothing to fear is a simple song about a simple truth that we often forget, there is nothing to fear for the Lord is with us!

The Right Kind of Strong ~ Revive Our Hearts
I haven't yet finished this series but it is so, so good! Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and two other women share how we as Christian women can be strong but in a Christ-like way. I highly recommend that you listen to this series!

MOVIES

Jeeves & Wooster {1990}

We started watching this series a few days ago and my whole family thinks it's hilarious! Set in the 30's, it is about Bertie Wooster and his butler/valet Jeeves and their 'adventures'. I just love it and the theme music is great too.

FASHION & BEAUTY

• Argan oil for your hair. It is great! I use it in my damp hair after a shower and it defines my curls, reduces frizz and makes my hair a lot softer! You only need a few drops so one little bottle should last a while too!

• Bow stud earrings
My sister got me these earrings as a birthday gift and I have worn them so much this month. I think they are just so cute!

That's all I have for you today!
Tell me what your favourite find of the month was in the comments below!

Weddings, Willows & Revised Expectations // Book Review

I had to use an image of a willow tree of course!

Hello darlings!

I ended up taking a little break from reading romance and any fiction in general, with the exception of a few books that I really needed to read, like this one (since the review was due by October).
So this past week I read Weddings, Willows and Revised Expectations and now I am here to give you my thoughts!

I was introduced to this author through Lindsey at Books for Christian Girls and then became acquainted with V. Joy Palmer through Instagram.
Last month I read Love, Lace and Minor Alterations by V. Joy Palmer and really enjoyed it. I couldn't wait to dive into this book.
Sadly, I didn't love it as much as I'd hoped I would. To me, it didn't quite live up to the previous book.
But I will do my best to explain my thoughts to you in this review!

Disclaimer ~ In accordance with FTC regulations, I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not compensated, nor was a positive review required. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis
"Seventeen years after being orphaned, Apryl Burns and her twin sister Courtney have their own expectations for life.
While Courtney continues to shine at everything, Apryl holds fast to the mantra that as long as her potato chip stash remains intact, then she'll be fine.
But when their beloved grandmother ends up injured and unable to manage her struggling antique store, Courtney makes it their mission to revamp the business and save what's left of their family legacy.
Despite rampant doubts in her abilities, Apryl finds herself trapped under the weight of family loyalty as they transition to a wedding venue decorating service. Soon she's forced to ask (translation: blackmail) their grandmother's renter/handyman, Chance McFarland, for help, and arrangement  that is made even worse by the fact that Chance is her former (ahem, and current) crush.

Chance knows a few dozen things about family loyalty, which is why he begrudgingly agrees to  Apryl's insane plan. While Apryl claims they're archenemies, the girl Chance only glimpsed in their teens starts to emerge, stealing what remains of his heart.
But expectations are a powerful thing. Amidst the glamorous weddings and swaying willows, can those old expectations be revised into something new?"

The Pros
First off, I have to say that I love the covers and titles for both of Palmer's books! They're perfectly fitted to the wedding settings in both books.
The titles may not make much sense to someone who hasn't read them, but as you read the stories, you begin to see how the titles perfectly fit the book's contents.

I loved getting to see Izze & Miles from Love, Lace and Minor Alterations again!
Other things I liked about this book were all the fun weddings that Apryl decorated. There was a ritzy Roaring Twenties wedding, a vintage travel themed wedding, and my favourite, the Anne of Green Gables one! This was fun aspect of the whole book that I enjoyed reading about.
I loved the cute romantic things that Apryl and Chance did together, like splashing in the ocean together. I also liked the fact that Apryl and Chance knew each other in high school so there was no insta-love.

One thing I enjoyed about reading this as an eBook was that I could highlight certain lines, and not feel guilty about ruining a real book.
These were some of my favourite quotes!

"All the bookworms I know tend to suffer from an overactive imagination."

"Apryl blushed, something Chance rather liked."

"You've reached the voicemail of Apryl Burns. You can leave me a message or try texting me, but I recommend showing up on person with a pan of brownies." (Great mind Apryl!)

"I had no idea that the tiles on the floor made a pattern." "Yes, it's amazing what you can find when you clean."

We not only get to see Apryl & Chance's romance but also Courtney's own love story. So it's like a two in one package. This felt out of place and confused me a little at first but then it all fell into palce and it was nice.

I have read a few books set in the wedding business and I quite like it as a setting for a story. (Reminding myself I still have a bunch of Janice Thompson books to read! A lot of hers are centred around wedding businesses.)
I do recommend reading these books in order, even though they can be read as standalones, everything will just make more sense and be more fun if you read LLAMA first.

One other funny thing is that in my neighbourhood, there's a guy who resembles Palmer's description of Chance and so that is how I pictured him!

The Cons
Now about the characters, I 'fell in love' with the little family introduced in the previous book and really liked Izze and Miles as a couple.
Apryl, Courtney and Chance however, I found harder to like and relate to.
I also found Apryl and Chance's sarcastic and pretty hurtful comments got a bit too much. In the words of Chance himself, "Sarcasm does not become you, Apryl." Sarcasm is so popular nowadays and I do think sometimes it is funny, but I also think we've go to be aware that it can hurt people's feelings. A lot.
That was the main thing that put me off. But also just the fact that the characters didn't agree with me as much as the characters from LLAMA.

There were a LOT of references to movies and other fandoms in this book, mostly relating to Batman, which I have know clue about! But there were a few Downton Abbey references that made my DA fan smile!
The witty comments were laughable, but not as much as in LLAMA (can you tell that I really liked the first book?).

I am not saying this book is bad, it just do for me what Palmer's first book did, which was make me laugh, giggle, swoon and smile at her characters and the message of waiting for the right one and being content in singleness.

If you want a nice, clean, contemporary book with a good Christian message, then this book might be for you. Also if you are Batman or potato chip fan, you will get along splendidly with our main girl, Apryl!

I also recommend you read Love, Lace and Minor Alterations!

Living to please the Lord

Hello darlings!

Are you living a life that is pleasing to God? Or are you living to please others and fit in with the crowd?

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. ~ Galatians 1:10 ESV

If you're like me, maybe you answered yes to both questions. Maybe you have good intentions of living a godly lifestyle but still lack total commitment and surrender to Him.
It is hard to live in a way that is pleasing to the Lord, especially when there are so many influences in our culture that tell us to do otherwise.

We might intend to dress modestly, but are told by clothing brands and advertisements that that is simply not attractive.
We might have the desire to spend time in God's Word, but our culture says that it is much better to relax and watch a movie instead.

I speak to myself when I say that I think we need to redirect our goals from pleasing the world to pleasing our loving Father.

Living to please others is a very futile goal. The truth that I think most of us know is that you can never please everyone.
Not everyone will like the way you dress, not everyone will be passionate about the things you are passionate about, not everyone will agree with you about everything, not everyone will like you.
We cannot rely on the opinions of others because they will always be different, varied and sometimes we simply do not know what people are thinking.

But what we can rely on is what God thinks of us. His thoughts about us, his creation, are recorded for us to read in the Bible.
God will not forsake you, He cares for you, He loves you more than anyone else ever could, He gives us grace and mercy when we make mistakes.
While we may not always know what others think of us, we can be assured of what our Father in heaven thinks of us.

And that is all that matters. We are on this earth solely to give glory and honour to Him. Our purpose in life is to live for Him and make him known among the nations. To pour out His love to everyone around us just as He did on the cross for us.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. ~ Colossians 3:23-24

To close this off, I do believe that when a young woman (or a guy), lives his or her life out in a way that is pleasing to the Lord, it will show and even cause others to be drawn to you. The love that God will show people through you is attractive(not in a romantic way, although it can be)!
So in the end you may get new friends, get noticed by others or even attract a great godly guy, but all of this is only and added bonus(if you will) to truly living for Jesus and focusing on Him to satisfy and fulfil you.

When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. ~ Proverbs 16:7

Make drawing closer to the Lord, serving Him and loving others some of your main priorities in life and other good things may come out of that.
The Lord bestows blessings upon those who demonstrate full surrender and obedience in their lives.

I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart. ~ Psalm 40:8

Recommendation: Listen to THIS podcast episode by Revive Our Hearts called 'How You Can Truly Please God' to help you learn more about this topic!

This is just something I was pondering last night and sat up to quickly jot down!
I hope and pray that it blesses you and that together we will be renewed by the transforming of our minds as we behold the face of Jesus daily and become more like Him every day. (Romans 12:2)

The Mary Poppins Book Tag

Hello darlings!

I saw this tag on Jenna's channel , where she created this brilliant tag and I thought it looked too fun to pass up.
It combines the songs from both Mary Poppins movies(Mary Poppins & Mary Poppins Returns)and uses each song as a prompt for a book.
Since it has been a wee while since I did my last tag, I figured it was about time I did one again.

Just before I begin, make sure you subscribe to Jenna's YouTube channel and her blog for more fun bookish stuff like this tag(I'll link her info at the end of the post)!

Off we go!

1. Sister Suffragette - name a book that has a strong female character

I think I'd have to say Caroline Ingalls or Ma from the Little House series, even though she wasn't a fictional character. I admire the strength she displays through all the books. Whether it is simply going about her day out on the wild prairie and all of the hard work that entails or surviving the long winter they experienced, Caroline Ingalls faced them with a calm spirit and wise actions to help her family function and stick together.

2. Spoonful of Sugar - a really, REALLY sweet book

Heart on the Line by Karen Witemeyer! Set in 1800's America, two people meet and fall in love through telegraph messages, how sweet is that!
And that's not all! Amos, our male lead, is not like the other hunky cowboy characters in many books like this. Instead he is the nerdy type who rides a bicycle, wears glasses and works at a telegraph office. This sweet novel also had it's more suspenseful moments toward the end and a thread of mystery throughout the plot, it's winning combo!

3. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - a book that left you speechless

A book that left me speechless was Land of Silence by Tessa Afshar. The story kept me turning the pages and left me speechless in disbelief that it could get any worse. But it got a lot worse before it ever got better! I really enjoyed it though, the characters went through a lot and grew in many ways.
This was my first read from Tessa Afshar and it definitely impressed me! I cannot wait to read more from this author.

4. Let's Go Fly a Kite - a book that made you extremely happy

I could have gone with a few books here, but I settled on The Cherished Quilt by Amy Clipston. I had hoped to reread this series this year but that doesn't look like it will happen.
So, this, the third book in the Amish Heirloom series, is favourite out of all of them.
The whole series makes me happy but his one was just extra sweet and happy. I have a review posted here on the blog, if you'd like to read it here.

5. Underneath the Lovely London Sky - a book with a fun/beautiful/unique setting

For this prompt, I have chosen The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman.
The setting is 1920's Australia but mostly on the little, beautiful island of Janus Rock. The imagery is beautiful! With parts talking about and describing the sea, sky, Janus Rock and the lighthouse which is rather unique. It is a beautifully written novel, though it may make you cry too!
Read with caution though, as some parts are a bit inappropriate and there is some swearing.

6. Can You Imagine That? - a book with fantasy elements

I have read very little fantasy. In fact, this is about the only one! But I did enjoy it and I am looking forward to the sequel (looking at you Kara!).
There are many fantasy elements to the story. The main female lead has the power to make fire through her fingers and there are many others who have gifted magical abilities.

7. A Cover is Not the Book - pick a book you wish had a different cover

I searched long and hard through my Goodreads shelves to find a book for this prompt. Finally I decided to use The Noble Servant by Melanie Dickerson.
The cover is nice, if it were a stand alone. But it is part of the Medieval Fairy tale trilogy and it should have a matching cover to the first two books.
I wish it would have been printed to match, and then all of them would look wonderful together. But instead, it doesn't even look like it belongs to the Medieval Fairy tale trilogy!

8. The Place Where the Lost Things Go - a book that made you sad

I'm going to go with The Magic of Ordinary Days by Ann Howard Creel. I picked up the book because I had seen and loved the Hallmark movie adaptation.
However, this became one of those rare instances where the movie is better than the book. I believe it captures the title and the story in a much better way. The book made me sad because it didn't live up to the expectations I had after seeing the movie.

9. Nowhere to Go But Up - pick the first book in a series that was the perfect set-up for what was to come!

Last but not least, for this prompt I pick Summer Promise by Robin Jones Gunn. This is the very first book in the whole Christy Miller series.
This book, though not my favourite, was a great set-up for all the great moments and adventures to come! I thoroughly enjoy reading this series and I am almost up to starting The College Years!
I can't recommend them enough, and if you have not read them yet I don't know what you are doing!

That concludes my take on the Mary Poppins Book Tag, created by Jenna van Mourik. I'll leave all her info below!

I hope you enjoyed this tag as much as I did and that you got some new book recommendations too!

My Favourite Youtubers

Hello darlings!

Today I bring you another list!
List posts are some of my favourites to read and to write. This particular post was requested by a followers on my Instagram (@joy_and_wildflowers).

I used to watch a lot of channels on YouTube that made me want more things and be dissatisfied with what I had. I sort of decided to be a bit more intentional with what I was watching.
I slowly found a bunch of Christian YouTubers and now the majority of the YouTube I do watch is from these Christian channels. Instead of making me unhappy, they inspire, encourage and are much more enjoyable than the others.

Without further ado, let's get onto the list! (These will be in no particular order by the way!)

1. Coffee & Bible Time
This might be at the top for a good reason, even though I am not putting these into any sort of order. Coffee & Bible Time was one of the first Christian channels I discovered on YouTube about two years ago and I have been enjoying their content ever since.
Sisters, Ashley and Taylor, create videos on Bible study, journaling, and other things pertaining to the life of Christian women and girls today.
I find their videos inspiring, encouraging and fun to watch!

2. Coffee Girls
Coffee Girls is Ashley and Taylor's second channel that covers everything from day in the life videos to makeup & hair tutorials. It's their more casual, day to day stuff that they like to share and it can be quite entertaining while still being inspiring and faith-centred.

3. Girl Defined
Kristen & Bethany, sisters again, are tow of my biggest 'role models'! I love their books, their blog, their YouTube (I wonder how many times I've said YouTube by now!), and following their lives on Instagram.
They are like the big sisters I never had and share so much Biblical wisdom on femininity, womanhood, guys, relationships, marriage and pretty much every topic you could wish to know about.
I have reviewed two of their books on my blog, Girl Defined and Love Defined.

4. Mrs. Midwest
I only found this beautiful lady a wee while ago and already I love her channel. Caitlin is a young, married homemaker who aspires to inspire women to be feminine and adopt the simple homemakers lifestyle.
Most of her content is most sit-down, chatty sorts of videos. But she has recently started doing more daily life as a homemaker types of videos and I love those.

5. Lauren Johnson
Lauren is a fashion YouTuber who's style I would describe as classy, feminine, with a touch of vintage!
She makes outfit look books, styling videos, sewing tutorials and other fashion related content.
I love her style and she has inspired some my own wardrobe changes recently as well. She also has an Etsy shop where she sells a bunch of her beautiful handmade clothing and accessories.

6. Lindsey from Books for Christian Girls
I first found Lindsey through her book review blog, but when I found out that sh had a YouTube channel I headed over there too.
She set out to find good, clean books for Christian girls to enjoy, and so she write detailed content reviews on her blog. Her channel is where you will find lots of bookish fun so if you love books and Christian books at that, I suggest you watch her videos!

There you have a few of my favourite YouTube channels!

I hope you enjoyed this short little post and remember to come back on Monday when I'll hopefully have a new post up!

gratitude not mindfulness

via Unsplash

Hello darlings!

As I was taking my dog Molly for a walk today and breathing in the fresh air, I was struck with a thought.
A thought that I will now share with you.

In the past couple of years, one of the popular practices that many people have begun implementing into their lives is mindfulness.
I'm sure you've heard that word before, in a self-help book, on the Internet, or on the cover of a colouring book.

(This article has some great point on mindfulness and self-care! I got some of the inspiration for this post from it and it explains both from a Biblical perspective.)

In on YouTube video I saw once, a lady was suggesting the practice of mindfulness as a healthy habit and demonstrating an exercise for mindfulness were you take note of your surroundings carefully and meditatively. "Notice 5 things you can see, 4 things you can smell" etc.

I remembered this when I was out walking today because I was enjoying the fresh air and the way it smelt.
Then I thought how instead of tuning into your surroundings, practising mindfulness and self-care, we should be pouring out gratitude to God for all the small and beautiful things he gifts us daily.

I love to take a step back and notice all the beautiful things in life(especially nature)that sing the praises of God.
I love to think about how the air smells during different times of day, how the sky looks, beautiful flowers, the seasons and appreciate how lovely they are.

But instead of simply being mindful of these things or meditating about them, we should praise the Lord and be thankful that God created all things beautifully and for His glory.

Take a moment today to look at the things around you, count your blessings and cultivate a heart of gratitude!

I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. ~ Psalm 9:1

O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. ~ Psalm 104:24

5 Things You Won't Find in my Wardrobe

via Unsplash
Hello darlings!

I have shown you a bit of what is in my wardrobe, but the other night I was thinking and I figured it might be fun to tell you bit about the things you won't find in my wardrobe.

These will be things that I don't buy, don't like to wear or aren't part of my personal style. I am not saying that I think you shouldn't wear or own any of these items. These are just my personal preferences!

Without further ado, let's go!

• • • •

1. Tank tops
Okay, so this one has a slight exception. Personally, I am okay with tank tops that have wider straps, but not ones with super thin 'sleeves', spaghetti straps or a neckline that shows cleavage. I still don't actually own any but if I was to find one I liked with wider straps, then I might consider buying it.
Here is an example of the kind of tank that I would wear.

2. Leather pieces
Things like leather jackets, faux leather leggings or skirts, don't fit in with my more floral, feminine style.
I believe that wearing leggings on their own isn't a modest choice and I think that the faux leather leggings/pants are ugly.

3. Animal print
Like I said before, I like floral and feminine styles and animal prints just don't appeal to me. I'm not saying that animal print can't be worn in a feminine way. It's just that I don't particularly have a thing for it.
Animal print styled in a feminine way!

4. Tight fitting pieces or loose & baggy clothes
Because modesty is a big part of my fashion choices, I don't go for body hugging pieces.
On the other side of the spectrum, I also don't wear loose/oversized clothing as seems the trend at the moment.
I like to be somewhere in the middle. I like clothing the fits properly, flatters my feminine features but is also comfortable. I never feel nice in oversized or looser fitting pieces.

5. Mini skirts
This goes along my modesty guidelines and also just personal preference. I don't like, nor do I believe it's right to have so much of your legs showing.
I wouldn't be comfortable wearing a mini skirt or really any skirt that goes above my knee.
Knee-length or longer skirts are what I love to wear and what I feel the best in!

Tell me, are you the same with these preferences?
What do you not have in your wardrobe?

My Favourite Recipes to Make

via Unsplash
Hello darlings!

Something about me you might not know is that I used to not like cooking or baking very much. But earlier this year I began to get into it more and now I actually enjoy it and love trying out new recipes!

So today I thought I would do something a little different and share with you my favourite recipes to make.
In no particular order, I bring you my favourite recipe to make(so far)!

1. Amish Bread (Link to Recipe)
Bread is seriously so fun to make yourself! Yes, it is a little time consuming but it is also very rewarding. This recipe is quite easy and very delicious. You simply have to try it!

2. Chocolate Brownie (Link to Recipe)
I substitute the flour for ground almonds jut because I like the gooeyness it gives. These brownies are great if you want to put together a quick but yummy dessert or satisfy that craving for something chocolatey!

3. Chewy Pumpkin Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies (Link to Recipe)
These are highly requested in our house and I have gotten a bit tired of making them but they are very yummy! It is a pretty simple recipe with delicious results.

4. Sourdough Pancakes (Link to Recipe)
You might think that this sounds strange, but if you like the sourdough flavour you will like these. I normally whip up a batch for afternoon tea and we enjoy them with jam and tea!

These recipes are mostly sweet ones so I suppose that says something about me! While it was short and sweet(see what I did there? hehe..), I hope you enjoyed this post and please try out at least one of these recipes!

July Favourites & Wrap-up

via Unsplash

Hello darlings!

We're over halfway through the year. Next month is my birthday month and I am excited about the upcoming celebrations.

This Winter has been very mild and there are even early Spring flowers popping up everywhere!
I just realised that I have only posted several this month! I'm not happy about that but that's just life sometimes, it gets busy.
So here we are to recap what my favourite discoveries where for the month of July!

BOOKS

This month I read a total of four books, much less than last month but I enjoyed them all very much.
• A Time to Cherish (Christy #10) by Robin Jones Gunn
• Land of Silence by Tessa Afshar
• Love, Lace and Minor Alterations by V. Joy Palmer
• Catching Contentment: How to be Holy Satisfied by Liz Carter (nearly finished)

I have to say that all of these book make it into my favourite reads of the month list! Land of Silence was my second Biblical fiction read ever and my first Tessa Afshar book. It did not fail to impress and I look forward to reading more by Tessa. I even completed it in only a week! You can read my full review on Goodreads.

As for Love, Lace and Minor Alterations, I loved it so much! Vanessa's writing is fun, quirky and will have you smirking, smiling and even giggling to yourself while you read it. I can't wait to dive in to her second book that released earlier this year, Weddings, Willows and Revised Expectations.

MUSIC & PODCASTS

I didn't actually listen to much music this month but I did listen to a couple of great podcasts.

• Compassion is Kindled ~ Revive Our Hearts podcast episode
I really enjoyed listening to this episode and I can't wait to hear the next part in the series today!

MOVIES

Unbroken : Path to Redemption {2018}

I thought this movie was really very good. It is all about Louis Zamperini's story of how he recovered and found redemption in Christ after he returned to America from being in a Japanese prison camp.
This movie was wonderfully done and truly inspiring to watch.
I also can't help but mention that the over all setting in the late 1940s had it's charms and Cynthia's wardrobe was quite adorable!

Five Feet Apart {2019}

Disclaimer: There is some content in here I do disagree with and some comments (in regards to sex) that should have been left out. One of the other patients with cystic fibrosis is also gay but nothing is shown.
But otherwise it is an interesting story and a real tearjerker! There are some sweet moments between Stella and Will that you can't help but love. The whole cystic fibrosis thing is so sad to see. When you see people like these characters who are sick for life (most of the time), it really makes you appreciate you own good health.

FASHION & BEAUTY

• Scrunchies
I actually only wore one once this month but I loved how it looked and I would love to get a few more to play around with!

Did you do anything exciting this month?
What are your goals for the month of August?
